Picture this: You’re on a road trip with your children in the back of your Santa Fe. From your review mirror, you see your son’s coat caught in the rear door. You pull over to the side of the road, and when the coast appears clear, you attempt to deactivate the Electronic Child Safety Lock. Your son pulls on the door handle when suddenly another vehicle approaches fast from behind.

Hyundai Safe Exit

That’s when the Hyundai Safe Exit Assist feature comes into play. Using both audible and visual warnings — a series of lights and beeps — Safe Exit Assist (SEA) overrides your attempt to deactivate the Electronic Child Safety Lock. Once the road has cleared, a simple push of a button unlocks the door and your son exits safely.

Later, you arrive at the crowded parking lot of a local attraction. Your daughter has her eye on the gift shop and her hand on the door handle when another vehicle pulls into the spot to your right. Detecting the oncoming vehicle, Safe Exit Assist uses existing blind-spot radar sensors to keep your daughter locked safely inside until the other vehicle is parked.

Saving Children is the Goal

Vehicle-related accidents are the number-one killer of children. And, according to the non-profit KidsandCars.org, roughly 2,400 children die each year from non-traffic, car-related deaths, which occur mostly in parking lots and driveways. According to Hyundai, one of the main goals of Safe Exit Assist – which is part of their SmartSense™ suite of advanced safety and driver-assist features – is to prevent those accidents caused by children dashing out as soon as the car stops, by offering “the opportunity to keep them safe a little bit longer and make sure the coast is clear.”

A Boon for Cyclists, Too

As they weave in and out of city traffic, cyclists and e-scooter riders are at risk of getting struck by opening vehicle doors. A dooring accident can cause serious injuries ranging from broken bones to traumatic brain injuries, depending on the severity of the accident. Safe Exit Assist can help reduce the number of these injuries, as well.
